Aw4 vs 5 Speed

How much more work is involved in fitting an AW4 over the GV 5 speed with hydraulic clutch?

It looks like the GV manual box will need to have the shifter extension shortened, the tunnel will need to be slightly widened, a modified cross member fabricated, shortened jackshaft, relocate the heater tap, install clutch master cylinder on firewall and modify clutch pedal.

My ECM appears to have integrated transmission control. If I can find a GV AT plug, is it a matter of using the the TT auto conversion kit, shortening the jackshaft, swapping in an auto pedal box from a vit and making a loom? Aside from the time required to make the loom, the hardest part seems like it would be finding the GV plug and not blowing holes in the trans tunnel.

It sounds like it's going to be more trouble than it's worth to run the GV 5 speed.

I guess you'd 100% have to know for sure that you can control an AW-4 from your ECU. other than that, it's way, way less work than what you are proposing. If you can get an AW-4 with it's loom and TCC, you would have something to work with, as in, it might be possible to feed the vitara TCC the right inputs to shift properly even if the manual GV ecu won't drive the AW-4

There's no need to install an auto pedal box. In fact, a vitara pedal box won't work - it puts the pedals too close to the floor. I tried.

Just unbolt the clutch pedal off of the sierra pedal box, and use a spacer or shorter bolt. (The brake and clutch pedal swing off the same pivot bolt)

On top of that, you need to run cooler lines and a cooler.

The other option would be to use a standard vitara manual, surely these are just about free like vitara diff housings and transfers. I think I remember seeing these require little persuasion to get them to fit into the sierra tunnel

You should be able to find another plug somewhere that will be roughly the same as a GV auto plug for the ecu. As an example, I've built an electric locker controller for an 80 series and found a camry door lock module had the same plug that was 4 pins longer, trim it down, put it all in a jiffy box and it looks factory.

As per steves comments, it might be worth finding the pinout for the ecu and probing it with a multimeter to make sure the auto part of it is enabled. I think I have a complete SQ416 workshop manual/wiring diagrams at home if you don't have the correct one.

Thanks guys.

I've decided to go with the AW4, but temporarily run the Sierra 5 speed until I have enough spare money for an AW4 and accessories.

I believe I have the correct version of the manual, but as it is a late model SQ416 a few wiring diagrams are different, however the ECU pinout appears to be accurate.

I should be back to the wiring next week and will test the auto circuit.
