Stoping Power

Post by porter.8.luke »

I'm looking for a replacement Master cylinder. I now that a lot of us don't play with them much but I do need some advice on this
as brakes are kind of needed and need to work well. So some one told me a type of Subaru master would fit with little argument also
some type of Nissan master cylinder (Patrol?) I'm looking to replace/modify as little as possible so help/advice would be grate.

Cheers

Hi Luke, there's basically two obvious options that bolt up to the stock 1.3 booster.

Subaru Forester GT - this is what Greg and I run. I cant remember the bore right now but I think it's 1-1/16"

Nissan GQ Patrol 2 bolt

Obviously, you'll have to make your own push rod, but it's no big deal.

However, Both these master cylinders were intended for 4wheel disc applications. They might not proportion properly with the much smaller piston volume of the drums, and will lack a residual pressure valve to hold the linings close to the drums.

Normally when people are doing an MC upgrade, it's because of 4 wheel discs. You could try asking on Auszookers (or have a search) to see what people have done with the master cylinder when they've swapped to hilux axles - the brakes are pretty similar.

Thanks Steve

I have had a look around and not a lot of people have answered the question with enough detail or I haven't found the right post yet.

What year forester would that be?

Original shape GT (dunno - 2000ish?) you'll find that a bunch of turbo subarus have the same MC though - my STi had the same MC as the GT forester

There is also a master cylinder for a GQ patrol that is for disc front, drum rear with a 1" bore. If the disc/disc master cyl bolts up then it is likely this is also of similar bolt pattern/mount. Theres a couple of them for sale on ebay, it would be worth confirming the dimensions with the seller.

JrZook on auszookers runs a master cylinder out of some sort of honda I'm pretty sure, I believe he also still has rear drums so it might be worth sending him a PM
