High Country Tour, 26-29/1/13

Post by steve125 »

TRIP TITLE:
High Country Tour, 2013

TRIP DATE:
26/1/13 - 29/1/13.

TRIP DESCRIPTION:
A rough itinerary will be:
Saturday - meet at Corryong, then camp south of Corryong.
Sunday - drive over Mt Pinnabar, drop down to the Murray at Tom Groggin, then south on Davies Plain & Limestone Creek Tks.
Monday - Benambra, Omeo, over Hotham, then south on Dargo High Plains Rd, side trip to Blue Rag, then continue on to Dargo.
Tuesday - climb Billy Goats Bluff, visit Pinnacles, continue south on Marathon Rd with a side trip to Valencia Creek, back on the bitumen at Briagalong, then onto Melbourne.

TRIP RATING:
Easy/medium

TRIP MEETING POINT:
Corryong Visitor Information Centre, 50 Hansen St, Corryong (google maps has it as Hanson st), this is just before the first round about.

Corryong is around 450km from Melbourne, so I'm going to allow for 6 hour travel time and make the meet time 3pm.

Chris, there is angle parking out the front of the Information Centre, if you turn right (south) at the round about into Jardine st you should be able to park with a trailer. We will be taking Jardine st out of town.

WEATHER
A little bit of rain will be OK, but if there is a lot of rain (unlikely) it could be a problem. Davies Plain tk is clay based and impassable after heavy rain.

Also if there is a heat wave & extreme fire danger, we might have to look at other options.

Either way we can find some interesting drives in the area.

Steve

As long as work committments don't get in the way I will be in this one. Just the sort of trip I enjoy most. The last one you ran was great.

Steve

How much fuel would we need to carry for this trip. I assume nothing in between Corryong and Dargo but I am not sure how far that is.

Should be able to get fuel at Benambra, or if they're closed for the public holiday, then Omeo 20km up the road should have fuel.

Corryong to Omeo is around 200km.

I will carry my normal 3 x 10L jerries.
I happy to share if people don't have room for extra fuel, or don't want to carry it.

200K in the mountains may use more fuel than normal.

I have just got home from a very similar trip with a bunch of jeeps.
The drive over Mt Pinnabar was the best of the lot, a few little rock ledges that made things interesting, not difficult though for those with lockers.
You guys should have fun, it would be tempting to go again but I will be on the sunny gold coast.
