pm me your email as i have some cage rules that we used in trials in NZ, that are a lot more relaxed than anything from CAMS.
it gives size of tubing in relation to weight and a pipe/tube grade that might be of use.

Design is dependent on time, material, fabrication skill, tools at hand (dies etc), required strength, weight, projected use, aesthetics and budget. There's just masses of variables. The best thing to do is do lots of research.

I don't think there is any problem using so called "black" or 32NB Schedule 40 pipe, but it's heavier and not as nice to work with. (it's less dimensionally accurate, doesn't bend as nice etc)

I completely understand Mitches comment, however, we're pushing cageless cars quite hard at the moment, and if we create the impression that a cage needs to meet competition specs or its no good then the end result will be less cars on tour and disgruntled members. Hell, my car fell over about 4 times at Bill's block on the weekend.

It's up to each owner how much protection they are willing to pay for.

I will say this:
I would discourage aluminium alloy cages.
I think 32NB Sch 40 is fine, as is 1.75" CDS for a basic 4 point cage. Foot plates need to be a minimum of 100X100mm and have a different sized backing plate. Cages should be fully welded by someone who is competent. Welds should not be dressed, filled with bog or silicone, or have multiple weld runs to "butter up" poor tube fit. I would strongly recommend a diagonal from a top to bottom corner of the main hoop (across the car).

Other than that anything else is up the owner. Make it as fancy as you like - it's your car.

I can't say a cage made from smaller material isn't safe, but it would require more triangulation so it would be more time consuming and potentially more expensive and heavier, even though the material is lighter and cheaper.

I woud like to be able to fit the tube between the door and dash at the front with a bit of trimming perhaps and I would like the wall of the tube to be thick enough so it isn't impossible to weld.

So after discussing this at the club meeting I have some rough figures worked out, these will change depending on the final numbers but I dont expect it will be much unless a lot of people pull out.
All lengths are 7.3m 44.45x2.6 (or 38.1x2.6mm if you choose)
CDW is going to come out to around $15 per meter or $110 per length
CDS I have an estimate of $20 per meter or $150 per length

The first people in for half lengths will get them as long as there is a pair for the other half.

Please give me your final orders by monday next week (23rd) and I will place the order.

What is the consensus on diameter?

Hi Jon, 44 is the most common size I believe.
