How about this digital EGT gauge? It also has a relay so could be used to trigger a spray etc. They have range with green or red display, standard or fast response thermocouples and can be ordered with analogue output for data logging. The prices seem pretty good too.

The diesel boys use these quite frequently and I havn't heard a bad word about them.

As a matter of personal preference, I like analog displays ( simulated or real ) with a digital inset as it takes longer to read and comprehend a digital gauge than check the position of a pointer. But I'm being VERY picky.......
In competition vehicles it usual to install analog gauges rotated so that during correct operation all the needles are pointing up to facilitate quick reading.

I'd be using a contact to trigger a buzzer to draw your attention to a high EGT condition - as a matter of principle I don't like anything that relies on a consumable ( ie water spray etc ) to manage the engine. Thats where programable ECU's win out - the system can drop to a more conservative map to spare the engine.

So do I but I figured the EGT guage probably won't be that fast moving and with an alarm and probably only really needing to worry about it reaching a certain figure it would be acceptable.

I have done this before myself and think that is the best way to go where possible.

That is what the relay can do and I would do as I feel that a decent warning buzzer is hard to ignore, especially if coupled with a light as you can't always be watching the guages. This also applies to low coolant alarms which I am considering too. The Haltech Interceptor I have that I am thinking of using has the ability to run two maps. It would be nice if it could be set to do what you are talking about.

Actually cj!, it probably could with a bit of fiddling and thought....

You could use its outputs to shunt an engine sensor to lower performace ( IIRC Steves ecu has a cal resistor that changes mixture... ) perhaps something relatively simple like this could do an excellent job.

Ok, I've been looking and decided that the digital EGT will do for now due to the group buy price on Outerlimits but the question is which thermocouple. I like the idea of a fast response one and they have a couple of fitment options

Have the Subaru one with it. Might see how it goes with that first. The Bosch one is ideal though and I can see it finding a home at some point.

If its an OE pump - its probably going to be reliable, especially if its not a DD. If it works use it.
