Chris has informed me that the campsite and bridge is now under water
I think this makes the Christmas trip officially washed out.

Left the dry and warm eastern suburbs about 11.30, started raining on the western ring rd, then it really started raining on the western hwy, water over the road and lots of cars pulling over. Back to regular, but constant, rain at Bacchus Marsh. The road into O'Briens was almost a 4wd track itself, probably have a few bog holes on it by tomorrow. Anything that wasn't flat had water gushing down it. Anything that was flat had lakes forming on it. Met Marty and Chris at O'Briens about 2.00 and the water was only half way up the bridge. Stood under the shelter for a while watching the rain go from heavy to heavier and back to heavy and decided it was time to go.

Some video and photos off me phone.
Can't believe how fast a river can rise.
I always knew it was risky camping near rivers, but I was up higher.
Had a ball, pity it was cut short, but too dangerous to stay with so few people about.
Had a great night with a bunch of 70 ish year olds at a bucks turn.

That sure did come up quick.

In the last photo, what happened to the people who had their tents set up in the area behind the posts?

Ranger warned them river was on the rise, and it could flood that area. They had just finished packing up and it started to fill up. They were about to drive the van across the bridge, while it was still only a few inches over the bridge, but I advised them against it, so they went round the long way to camp at Firth Park.

Wow - amazing to see that much water in the river.

I was about 1km out of Gisborne on the Bacchus Marsh road when my turbo died. It had been making some odd noises for 20km or so, but after we stopped in Gisborne for supplies, it pretty much didn't make any boost again and then started pumping oil out. I would have almost driven in with no boost if it wasn't for the oil pumping out.

Total care to the rescue!

Steve.
