chris, the XL7 diff is a salisbury (dana) type and completely different. it will not work.

The housing bolt's together where the Gv is one bit..
Xl7's are different to Gv. Hence different to Vit.
I got meself a 98 GV steel front diff :)

Chris, when you are adapting the Sierra housing you do need to cut away the oil gallery to the pinion ( I did mention this to you
) and weld it up so that it clears the crossmember.
As for the XL-7 housing if you check back you will see a recent thread about a different style one that John found. I do not know when they came into being as the housing I have is also from an XL-7 and it is the same as a Vit or GV apart from a slight variation in the way it mounts to the crossmember and this is what everyone has had up until this recent discovery.

Here is an idea for a collar that is meant for those who broken the mount of the alloy housing. The concept could be adapted to use two Factory mounts (one each side) with a Sierra housing.



As for the XL-7 housing if you check back you will see a recent thread about a different style one that John found. Only intend to buy the axle and diff housings, and put in my mechanicals.

The XL-7 mount bolts to the face but the Vit/GV bolts through it (fore/aft). If you get a steel GV housing you can use the standard mount that you already have but if you get the XL-7 housing then you want to grab the mount as well or you will need to fab one up.

As you would have seen, the Vit doesn't have the same oil gallery so cutting and welding it isn't an issue. Either way, I'd feel safer with a diff that isn't cut n welded.
To run it with just a bit of grinding, would have worked, \
but was about 5mm off centre and about the same leaning back.
Long term reliability could have suffered.
