A novel "toy" to generate high pressure air...

Post by mightymouse »

Doing a "throw out" scavenge today and found a very interesting pneumatic device...

Its called a "booster regulator". Basically it takes low pressure air and increases its pressure by a regulated ratio ( max 250% of supply ).

What makes this interesting ( at least to me... ) is the traditional electric compressors output falls off quite markedly as you screw the pressure up, and airlocker pressure is quite high, making the compressor work hard.

So in operation the booster regulator uses twice the volume of low pressure air to create the higher pressure output ( at 100% boost ) - but as the electric compressor is so much more efficient at low pressure ratios it would seem that overall its a better outcome.

When I get time ( well eventually anyway ) will lash the thing up in the Mouse and see how the whole scheme operates in real life.
Tried it on the bench and it certainly works 0.5 Bar in - 1.0 Bar ( regulated ) out.

If you need really high pressure air for a special application, without overloading an electric compressor this would be a neat but probably not cheap solution. Also the volume of air stored in a high pressure receiver ( say 15 Bar ) would be a real winner.

This sort of stuff interests me.
