Electric water pump

Post by cj! »

Been looking at electric water pumps as I am looking at changing the air/air intercooler on the K6A to a water/air intercooler. I am curious about the flow rates. I found a comparison between a Bosch and a Davies Craig (DC) electric water pump that says the although they both have the same peak pressure of 10kPa or 0.1 bar, the Bosch flows 20l/min and the DC flows 13l/min. Now DC have two pumps available, a 80l/min pump and a 110l/min pump so I am wondering how the flow rates are measured as i have also read that the pump used by Subaru for their water/air intercooler flows 15l/min. Ross?

The Davis Craig pumps are but a shadow of the magnetically coupled, seal - less Bosch pumps..... they are commonly used by PWR etc for their Air/Water intercoolers.

If you send me your email then I will send you the data sheet for 0 392 020 034 - around the $88 dollar mark IIRC

Its exactly what I'm using for my Air/Water I/C and Steve is currently playing with.

Silly me...... Who would have though that club email addresses would work ?

Perhaps if you end up wanting a pump you could use the Presidents one - or perhaps not........

I'll post some more detail about this when I have the system more tuned in, but I've fitted two Bosch pumps to replace my trouble prone mechanical water pump.

They seem to provide plenty of flow and they have a range of advantages, but there's some interesting flow related challenges that need to be dealt with. (They are working very very well atm)

In short, my heater stopped working after I fitted the pumps. If I cracked a heater hose, there was heaps of flow (and I do mean HEAPS) but because I'm pumping from the bottom radiator hose, there clearly isn't differential pressure across the heater core, so there's no flow once the system is closed up.

Obviously the stock heater core is tapped in across the pump so it sees suction on one side of the core and flow on the other, promoting flow through the heater.

To get around the problem, I've hooked one side of the heater to a T between the two pumps, with the other side running back into the block so now there's differential pressure across the heater and I get heat.

I will have to do the same thing with the throttle body though, as currently the car takes FOREVER to come off of cold start (and involves turning the wter pumps off so the hot water rises into the throttle body and brings it off cold start. If it's idling and the fan cuts in it goes back onto cold start again- obviously there's no flow though the thottle body. On the move it's OK as there's enough thermo-cycling and heat being generated to keep the throttle body warm enough.

Just some feedback.

Like I said, I'll write up my findings properly once the whole system is working 100%.

PS I've used a thermo fan from an early 90's Magna (2.6 petrol) It's a very nice fit for a Sierra radiator and has a steel shroud so it's easy to work with.
