welded front pros and cons.

Post by robsjimny »

Hey all what are the pros and cons of a welded front. I will have the vacuum hubs working with a in cab bypass :) . Will my drive style have to change. How will it drive touring on gravel roads. Another air locker would be nice but I have one of mitch's hand me downs so I'll try that.

I reckon welded fronts suck. I'm spooled rear and even on hard trips I only use the front locker very occasisionally and for very short sections. Putting up with the poor turning circle, steering load etc all the time for the tiny bit you need it isn't worth it.

In relation to the vacuum hub thing, that's a great idea, but I think part of the problem with the vacuum hubs is that they unlock under high loads as they were never designed for the force a locker can put though them. Driving the car with a hub unlocked so you can steer also put lots of load on the front CV's/axles when there's no need.

I am having second thoughts on the front. Read some of Steve's art work on outer's great info. One problem with my hubs is that it's both or none. Thoe it is in now I may do the photo shoot and have a little play. If the ARB day pays off I may just go the air in the front too. One good thing out of the change was left hub was locked in all the time. A oil seal was blocking the hole. Cars suck lol.

My comment was with "a" hub unlocked not "both" hubs unlocked.

Rain came at the great time. Had a little play 2day. Don't really like the feel a ping pong effect. May do a quick swap out and just learn how to drive it the best with the new gears. 4th gear 20kms at 3,000 I think abit low maybe 31's in the future.
