Reduction gears, without effecting freeway driving.

Post by Nugget »

N00b question:
My mechanical knowledge is close to nothing. But I have high hopes....
Jimny is a 2014:
M18A engine
Non VVT manual gearbox
Manual transfer case with gearstick (03-04)
I'd like it to be able to crawl better off road, but not over-rev when on the freeway. Is this achievable? Which gear set should I get?..
Thanks to anyone who can point me in the right direction.

Dont know about Jimnies specifically.
But in general you looking at gear sets that only lower low range, and don't change high range.
Small change in high range like eg 10% is good for larger tyres on highway, though.
Tech heads should help more, soon

I’m compiling some numbers now and I’ll run some scenarios past you once I’ve crunched the figures.

Can you tell me what tyre size you’re running?

Ok, I ran your numbers just be sure if what I’m talking about.

I see you’re at around 3200rpm at 100km/h with a measured 30” tyre.
You currently have a crawl ratio of around 32:1 which is pretty tall.

Protrack in greece offer a drop in planetary to suit the early jimny case which will lower low range ONLY by 70%, which is pretty much what you’re asking for.

https://protrack.gr/en/gears/jimny-low- ... ry-unit-70

This suits 1998-2005 jimny transfer.

They also offer gear sets that lower both high and low by a percentage, but you don’t need that.

This planetary will drop your crawl ratio to 54:1, so at idle in low 1st you’ll drop from 3.4km/h to 2km/h. That’s going to feel like a big step.

Awesome! Thanks for doing the work on that Steve. Looks pretty much ideal.
I also found this:

Is it essentially the same?
