I have put together a rough plan for the rear build inside for this trip. Would like to get the fuel can outside but have to wait until I design the rear bar with swing arm. Wish I had the other half of my chippie tools from NZ now, router especially. Anyone know where I can get some black felt for the drawers unit?

I'm afraid it's no longer legal to carry petrol on the rear bumper.

Boo-urns, even at spare wheel height Steve? I see a lot of hillbilliy cruisers and pootrols around with one or two on a kaymar bar. Also no formal legislation regarding this. Is it because the modification puts the jerry cans outside the original body perimeter ie lengthening of vehicle? Maybe petrol is classed as a dangerous good in this situation and no one has queried if the quantum (20l or 40l) puts it as a dangerous good, especially when the stock tank is only protected by the open ended chassis rails and is similar in capacity. Ta.

Further research has determined (as usual) that it's a bit of a grey area, for some inexplicable reason the wording is different in each state and the issue is around "everything reasonable" and "due care" etc.

Diesel is 100% OK as it's not considered dangerous goods in the volumes we're discussing.

Petrol is more complex. It's definitely considered dangerous goods. Putting it outside the body lines of the vehicle makes it more vulnerable to damage in a collision than under the car. (also note that ADR's no longer permit fuel tanks aft of the rear axle in passenger vehicles for the reason you describe) It might be OK, but its not definitely OK, and that will also depend on the state you're in.

Personally, I'd be more worried about the extra weight of a bar and swing away more than the risk of a fuel fire. If the bar weighs more than the thing it's carrying, that's a net loss AFAIK.
