National meet up on AZ

Post by jonfromhamilton »

What do you guys think ?
I'm just reading through the posts on the thread on AZ and there seems to be some interest in cape york, I know this is sort of a worst case scenario for us here down in Victoria but it would be like one of those things you just had to do in your life, and would you do it if it wasn't a national meet up aswell?
Another thing though, and I don't know if this would be an issue but I don't want to get in a huge line of cars that make it a total of 3 km due to constant recoveries.

anyway, you say something now

Went to Cape York in 1986 with 6 Mokes from the Moke Ownners Assoc. of Vic.
Took us 7 days from Cairns to the Cape.
It is not any where near that hard a trip now,
but you definately need a reliable car.
Capable car certainly helps.
I tried to go on this years AZ National meet, but wasn't quite ready or able.
If it is Cape York as final choice,
I bet very few Southerners go.
South Aus trip had around 20 zooks, but wasn't a touring trip.

It would be fun,
but there is no way of knowing how well the trip will run, unless you go.

I'll be watching the topic when it gets closer

As a Kiwi doing a trip up the NT would be definately of interest to me.
It would be like going overseas for a massive adventure for me.
Hopefully we can get a few Victorians going then if all the AZ guys turn useless we can ditch them ;)

It is a brilliant area to be in.
If you survive the huge spiders, mean green ants,
biggish angry lizzards and the local beer.
But getting to the start of the dirt is a very long drive.
Or Car on train for part of journey.

Main car issue is suspension,
there is very long stretches of road with bone breaking corrugations.
In the Mokes it was drive very fast to smooth out the ride,
or real real slow, if you got sick of breaking stuff.

The exciting "off road" stuff is mostly just the river crossings going to the top,
and a swamp area if weather is so so, unless you venture into the off tourist areas.

Look up Mokes to Cape York on You Tube

I will look it up thanks Chris

I don't like the idea of long stretches of car breaking stuff.
It would have been good to get something where you get to play rather than just drive, I wouldn't have minded the sand down in coffins but oh well :D

Yep
I think it would be cool up there, not sure about getting into a choke thought on a narrow road.
Will you be at the meeting next week Chris ?

I should be at the meeting.
NT could change again.
I just did a rough budget, NT is a bit too far for me financially.
Would love to go on Fritters route,
I hate long tar roads
