High Idle Speed Sierra

I have a 1993 Suzuki Sierra, 1.3 litre 5 speed. In 6 years ownership never had a problem with this great car until now.
Recently both heater hoses needed replacement, both sprung a leak within a day of each other. Since then, I have noticed the engine idles vary high, between 1500 and 2000rpm. I have been told the auto chokes on this model are activated by hot water, both hoses leading to the carby get hot so I assume water is running through OK. Sometimes it idles normally, then it speeds up to 1500 to 2000 even when fully warmed up.
By accident I discovered I can drop the revs to normal by switching on the headlights but after a few minutes of driving the revs speed up again!

I imagine this is still an auto choke problem. Is there a simple fix? I live in a country town and cannot immediately get to a repairer. I would be happy if I could at least disconnect the auto choke (if that is indeed the problem) and stop the engine revving like a speed boat! Any help appreciated!!
