Transfer flange nuts

This is probably a dumb q, but how do I stop the input/output shafts from turning to remove the flange nuts?

The case is not in a vehicle and I will use a rattle gun to loosen them.
Do I use bolts to secure the rear output to the case, then undo the 2 front nuts followed by the rear, or is this going to damage something? The factory service manual says to use a special tool.

The easiest way is to rustle up a bit of strap steel, angle, a star picket or something and drill 2 holes in it that line up with two holes on the flange, then you can put your foot on the bit of steel and rattle gun the nut off.

That's the "special tool" I use.

Thanks Steve.
Always plenty of old star pickets at work, I'll make something tomorrow.

The star picket worked great, the brand we have even has a pair of holes the correct distance apart, just had to open them up a little.
