Having just connected Claire's computer to the net via tpg adsl, I figured an update was in order.

It won't update manually or automatically.

Checked with tpg and I have connected the modem and installed it properly and it is working quite correctly on the net and email, and thus it will be a windows problem, not a modem instal problem
(I'm glad it's not my fault )

I also loaded Avast Antivirus, and it updates correctly.

Haven't really looked at it thoroughly, yet, as it was getting late.
And haven't contacted ms help yet.
I just signed up to a vista help forum.

Any suggestions where to start would ne nice.

If you can browse the internet correctly and the your virus software updates correctly, then it is not your connection.

Vista is an issue at the best of times. I would not be surprised if it is something like it needs to be registered with Microsoft.

I had Vista installed on my laptop once. It lasted 2 days before I got jack of it and installed the trusty windows XP pro.

I would probably give HP a call..

Registration is a real possibilty, I certainly didn't do it, and its not been connected to net before, ever.
A lot of pop up windows were trying to connect to internet, which could have been clicked on "don't"
thanx will look into that

Most new software will look for an internet connection to register when you first install it.

If you click "later" on initial install my guess is you will need to register the software or you won't get updates.


PS I have no experience with vista or installing wrongdows on any computer.

I'm convinced thats it, but will be more convinced after I get it going.

Due to many things, like 1st computer dying, and Aus Air bad delivery, computer has been netless for too long.
I'm sure a reminder window will come, but if not I'll have to look for a registration link.

No, but I will tonight or Sunday depending on time etc

We were able to register no probs, and it was already activated.
It still didn't update.
So we checked out the firewall, by turning it off, and was instantly able to update windows.
Finished updating first, then looked thru firewall, to discover it was set to "public computer" security.
Have set the firewall to "home computer" security and now all is well.
Still a bit more updating to do on Sunday.
