Re-conditioning a bbq plate et al

I was given a gas bbq that had been left out in the rain for a rather long time, and never, ever cleaned.
I've ground away all the rust I can, to mostly bare metal.
And cleaned it up a tad.
Should I paint the cooking surface with "oven black"? or is there something else?
Do I actualy need to paint it if I keep it clean and oiled?
( I should do car the same
)
I don't have a gas bottle as yet, and I'm not sure of the seal/joint from gas pipe to bbq.
Is it just a joint, will the hose have what I need.
The generous people who gave it to me have no safety skills, so I need to find out what should be, rather than what is.
thanks all
