Re-conditioning a bbq plate et al

I was given a gas bbq that had been left out in the rain for a rather long time, and never, ever cleaned.
I've ground away all the rust I can, to mostly bare metal.
And cleaned it up a tad.

Should I paint the cooking surface with "oven black"? or is there something else?

Do I actualy need to paint it if I keep it clean and oiled?
( I should do car the same  )

I don't have a gas bottle as yet, and I'm not sure of the seal/joint from gas pipe to bbq.
Is it just a joint, will the hose have what I need.

The generous people who gave it to me have no safety skills, so I need to find out what should be, rather than what is.

thanks all

it'll be fine, as long as you clean and oil it after every use. this way it will last for years
Was thinking that, or similar.
If I can get it cleaned back to bare metal.
It's rather pitted, and may be rusted too far thru.
Will have another look at it one day.
