Bit off topic but I've started watching the Icelandic thriller 'Trapped' on Sbs. Some very impressive large snow tyres on their 4x4's. Good show too.

Icelandic 4wders were well ahead of the curve.
The first reduction gearset for a sierra was made in Iceland, as were dual transfers in hiluxes, NP203/205 doublers, dual valve stems- they also used Loran-C radar for navigation before GPS existed.

Not to mention formula off road

Steve.

Watched ep 5 last night. They used the snow rescue vehicles. The tyres are so big the full size 4x4s look like sierras on 35's

Yes, very common.

It's possible to buy sort-of factory approved vehicles in this spec from arctic trucks - they built the car Top Gear drove to the North Pole.

An interesting observation with these cars is that they retain standard axles and running gear - because snow is a low traction surface, they don't stress their driveline despite the huge tyres. Obviously running those tyre sizes in local terrain isn't feasible.
