fuel tank

Going to be building a fuel tank shortly and wanted to ask a couple things here first.
Rust... is it worth coating the inside of a tank with proper paint or will the petrol protect the raw steel?
Any ideas about factory fuel tanks? I thought they were bare steel on the inside.
Also pickup.
Any tips on the design of the tank where the pickup will reside?
Also keep it away from any reside i was thinking of having a low point away from the pickup to get around this.
