Hi Fellas.
Does anyone have some thoughts on hitch mount winches?
A winch that can be carried inside the vehicle out of the mud and only used when needed sounds like a good idea to me. Can also be fitted to front or rear as well.
Runva make a 2000kg hitch mount winch for less than $400 on ebay.
Regards, Wayne.

This is just like using a manual winch without the manual effort..
It would see use on medium/hard or solo trips, they aren't sexy
when a medium trip turns into a hard trip they would be awesome to help get out in time for tea.

I've bought an old warn 9000 off Harley, which will go in after I build a front bar some day.
Till then I will keep using my manual winch when it's needed.

Hi Wayne

Take a read through this thread in particular the post from Steve about winch ratings. http://www.auszookers.com/forum/viewtop ... =5&t=47451 My opinion is that a rear mounted winch might be handy if you are on your own and in a sticky situation but I would not rely on a 2000 lb winch to pull you any distance. I would prefer a good front mounted winch and a hand winch for rear or sideways recovery. Problem with the hand winch as Louis knows is that they are heavy and take up a lot of space. They are slow but for the number of times you would use it that is not a big issue. Just my thoughts anyway.

I carry a 4 ton hand puller/lifter thing for emergency use only. Fits in behind the seat,
Has a pull range of 1 metre or 2 metre at half pull.
Hope I never need to use it.
I like the theory of the hitch mount winches, have seen them used, but know nothing of them technically.

the biggest issue i see is the moment you need the winch, the hitch mount on the car is well and buried making it impossible to get to.
so you still end-up stuck, and might as well not bothered buying the winch.
