I put in a new (second hand) fuel pump on my Sierra in the weekend now the car won't start
am I missing anything ? shoiuld I have messed with the fuel line or anything like that ? could there be an airlock or something ?
was there any special preperation or configurement I should have bothered with before just bolting it up ?

car broken

When I swapped my engine I had a similar problem, what had happened was the fuel had drained back along the lines while they where disconnected so I had nothing going into the float. I ended up pulling the fuel line on the carby and sucking the hell out of it untill I got all the air out, and subsequently a mouth full of fuel

then popped the hose back on the carby and hey presto, my at was working again!!

might help, but I didn't actually change the pump, so I might just be raving on like a mad man!

I've had fuel in my mouth before

The small rod that pushes on cam can fall out without notice.
But priming it could work.

+1 on the rod
when I replaced my pump with a brand new one from suzistore, it took 3 or 4 goes before it would work, the problem was if the pump was not installed just right then the rod that runs off the cam would slip over the top of the lever that pumps the fuel, problem was solved by making sure the pump was at least square to the block or leaning out a little (by pulling the top of the pump towards the battery) as the bolts are done up.

Good point, have had cars before, where pump lever could slip wrong side of cam.

I found mine on the ground under car first time I did it wrong
I sat and watched one rod slowly fall out once, think they float out on an oil film.

^^^ all that the truth.
Very slightly loose hose clamp/hose
Too much air in the system
Pushrod fallen out
Rocker arm of pump installed under the pushrod.
I've had it all happen to me.
Steve.

the rod is only about 30mm long and I think it sits almost flush with block on the back stroke so it may not stick out as such, mine also fell out by itself but luckily I saw it happen, and make sure it's moving freely, if it has jumped over the pump arm on the first fitting, it may be jammed in the block, just grab it with pliers/multigrips, it should come loose.
