Cockpit closed for resurfacing

Apparently Cockpit at Toolangi has been closed for resurfacing. There is a gate and a sign saying that it will be reopened after resurfacing.
resurfacing suggests it once had a surface.I don't think it ever did.
But this sounds devastating, as it seems like this will be the end.
As per most of my faves.
I guess it was never going to be accessible in a fire truck.
