TRIP TITLE:
Camping at Horseyard Flat
TRIP DATE:
New dates - Friday 8th and Saturday 9th April
TRIP DESCRIPTION:
From Rosedale travel via Heyfield to the southern edge of the Avon Wilderness, crossing the Avon River several times, then continue north along the eastern edge of the AW to camp on the Moroka River at Horseyard Flat on Saturday night. Either Saturday afternoon or Sunday morning we will visit the Pinnacles and, time permitting, have a look at Billygoat Bluff. On Sunday, drive to the top of Mt Wellington and then onto Licola via Moroka Rd and Tamborintha Rd. From Licola, either return to Melbourne on the Princes Hwy or go over Mt Selma to Matlock and then Marysville.
TRIP RATING:
Easy/Medium - I haven't been to the area south of the Avon Wilderness, so, as it's a bit unknown I'll give it a medium rating.
The rest of the trip should be easy.
TRIP MEETING POINT:
Rosedale 10.00am
In the middle of town there is a car park on the left hand (northern) side of the Princes Hwy. The car park is a little hard to see but the entrance is immediately after the pedestrian crossing (the only set of traffic lights in Rosedale). If you miss the entrance, just follow the Hwy as it turns left at the pub, and then left again into Queen St and you will see another entrance to the car park. There is an IGA supermarket and a bakery across the road from the meeting point.
You can either fill up at Rosedale or we can make a quick stop 20km up the road at Heyfield which is the last opportunity for fuel until Licola. I estimate the distance between fuel would be between 200 and 250 km so a sierra should be OK but I still plan on carrying a jerry can just to be safe.
Here is the first in a series of Youtube clips showing the river crossings on the Avon.
