could be caused by any of the following (not a comprehensive list either)
low fuel level in the float bowl, dodgy fuel pump.
partially blocked main jet.
ignition advanced too far.
the issue really shouldn't show up unless you were doing highway miles or pushing it hard, it would have felt down on power for some time before damage occurred.
