Thanks for the hint about the brakes. I'll be sure to check this before I commit to anything.
The new wheels and tires will just a be second set for off roading so I won't be getting rid
of the nice alloy rims and tires I have now.

So I am looking for a 225/75/16 tyre or even something slightly smaller again 235/70/16.
I assume putting some bump stop spacers in is an easy job - ie: I can do it without any special tools?

Next question, how much emphasis should I put in a brand name?
Considering these aren't going to be an everyday tyre do you think I can get
away with something cheaper - ie: Some Unknown Chinese brand.
Or is it just not worth the risk...

Saw these at the 4wd show, plenty of 16 sizes,
very cheap, remoulds, seem ok,
but have not seen any perform yet.

They'd have to be pretty good in the mud

THey're very common in Europe. I'm sure they're great offroad, but I wouldn't run them as every day tyres.

These come in some 16's.
I run them on mine, very happy on and off road.

The wrangler MTR's were a good tyre.
I ran them on my GV for ages as my daily tyre
225/75 R16. I know Goodyear have changed the tread pattern now but I have not heard anything bad about them.

Maybe it is just me. But I would not skim on tyres just to save a few dollars.
For a second set agree, but not for the daily tyre.

One of them told me that I couldn't put 225/75/R16 on the car because its greater than 50mm bigger than the original tyres.
Apparently the car would then be illegal... can anyone provide any comment to this?

Legally the biggest tyre I could fit is a 235/70/R16

that would be correct.
but apparently you can't fit a 35 inch tyre to a sierra either

Hmm. They are correct.
Most tyres places are now strictly following the ADR rules.

Have a look at this calculator. Maybe my maths is wrong, but I can not see how they are 50mm larger than stock.
