Walhalla - April 2012

Post by Greg »

Hi Folks,

The september meeting regestered some degree of club interest in a trip to Walhalla.

Given that Richard sparked the most interest in the trip, we will attempt to re-schedule for some time in April 2012 when he is available to attend and (possible) run part of the trip.

Please post up your interest levels in the trip so that Richard and I can work out if it is worth running.

Thanks,
Greg

Is this going to be a Day or weekend trip?

My preference is a Day trip.

Tracks like
1. Beardmores
2. Coopers Creak
3. Deep Creek No 1

Just to name a few.

There are campsites in the actual township so if people wanted to camp or hotel it then the options are there.

Deep Creek tracks 1-4 are apparently notorious for destroying bigger 4by so I vote checking them out. There is also some great tracks north of the Dam but i can't quite remember where they are. The Dam itself is worth a look.

Coopers creek up and over to bruntons bridge and then back around to the top of walhalla takes you through some historical gold mining settlements and ruins if people are interested in that sort of thing.

There is also the Chinese tunnel which is accessible by a walking track just off the walhalla road which is worth a look if you like copious amounts of water pouring out of the side of a hill where chinese miners diverted the thompson river through a hillside to mine a bend in the river.

Mushroom Rocks on the way to Mt Erica is also a unique Myrtle beech Forest area intermingled with large granite outcrops, kinda lord of the rings style. It's about a 1.5km return walk from the carpark.

So plenty to do. I'm pretty keen for this trip.

I for one would really like to do this on a wknd basis just for the fact that there is so much to see and do there. I wld probably opt for a hotel stay but wld equally welcome camping and sharing some stories around a fire also. Am keen to go. marty. :)

i dont see why we cant make a weekend of it, and have anyone that just wants to do a day trip rock up on either day and just be a part of that days activities.

as i mentioned at the meeting - i'd like to check out the long tunnel mine (historic guided tour), also keen to get onto the deep creek tracks again, and would happily come back via noojee and into the east side of warburton which could easily make for an interesting return trip back to melbourne.

I'm interested in a w/end trip as there is plenty to see/do in the area. Also willing to assist in running the trip so welcome discussion at the Oct meeting re leadership responsibilities etc. April would be OK for me as I spend a lot of time in Tassie over summer - fishing! Cheers Richard

Could you give an indication on the track rating? I hope to have a couple of traction mods done to the Sierra by then, but I will still be 4WD inexperienced.

Any chance of a training day or two for newbies?
