Lucky I was wearing me new whizz bang hearing aids, or I may have missed it.
Was coming from front of motor somewhere, I was thinking alternator bearing, or similar.
I finaly found the noise with a garden hose in my better ear, moving the other end around,
till the nasty sound got louder.
After disassembly of entire timing belt etc, it was found to be a rubber gasket,
behind the rear piece that timing belt cover fits to.
It was too thick, thus it was slowly distorting the cover, till it hit the timing pulley.
Glad I found it before things went astray.

Serious question Chris - what could have gone astray? I'm sure the noise was terrible, but I can't see it dong any more than ultimately wearing some holes in the cover.

Idle has picked up a little, so it could have been stressing something?gwagensteve wrote:Serious question Chris - what could have gone astray? I'm sure the noise was terrible, but I can't see it dong any more than ultimately wearing some holes in the cover.
Steve.
It may have produced excess heat?
Maybe stressed edge of belt.
It was quite hard pressed up against it.
And yes maybe it could have done nothing bad at all?
But I am a little nervous with a new donk

Yeah maybe - I'm not arguing it was a good thing at all, but I don't think it was going to cause calamity. All the heat would be in the cover, not the pulley, and I'm guessing the load from the valvegear should, I imagine, be much higher than the load from a couple of little contact points on the tinplate cover. bear in mind basically the same pulley and belt drives twice the valvegear in a 16v motor.
If the belt was rubbing on the cover, not the steel pulley, then I take it all back - that's far from ideal. The belt would more than likely got fairly hot due to friction and that's not good at all. timing belt failure is a bitch to fix beside the road

I can't really be sure of anything.
But I do feel much better now its done.
And I have learnt something new, too.
