Avoca 22nd November

Post by mightymouse »

Been awhile since our last visit - going to do all the usual's and anything else that looks interesting.

Its an easy / medium sort of place, with a choice of lines ( although we had to create a bypass on Slate Quarry Track last time.... )
More rocks than mud.

Very easy to find - follow the trail of oil drips from the PhantomZooks last visit. :D

Meet in Avoca main street 10:00AM - visit the pie shop.

Fuel is available there

I forgot to add my name to the trip sheet at the meeting.

This is my first trip out that way, approximately what kind of distance is it from Avoca to the tracks? My fuel economy is pretty bad, need to work out if I should bring 1 or 2 cans off fuel.

What time are we meeting, was it 0930 or 1000?

9:30 meet for a 10:00 kickoff as its not just around the corner some leeway is best.... especially seeing the Mouse doesn't like the uphill all the way stuff

Won't do heaps of Km's ( the tracks are only 20ish minutes from Avoca ) so a full tank will be fine, or has proven so on previous trips.

Fuel is avilable at Avoca as is food if required. The pie shop was a big range, including many exotics if you wish.

Yes - still some rain will add to the excitement......

Think I'll bring the wet weather stuff just in case and perhaps the thermos :)

And I'll pack the orange tie down strap ( Lloyd will get this even if no one else does ).

Please tell everyone what you mean ?

From the rain we had yesterday, I would not expect much dust.
Any Photos/trip report?

Whats a trip report ? ;)

Interesting day....... passed Lloyd heading the other way ( he made the tough call that his car problem would hamper others ).

Started off with the usual round of Emu / Interesting pies at Avoca with the weather looking average but not actually raining.
Had a brief explore on the way to Waterfall and headed off to do the "usual" suspects. It then began to rain.... so now
we know what happens to the red dirt of Avoca when its rains - it turns to red grease. :D :D :D

Halfway up our first track (Frazer) Alan reminded me why I modify.... a stock Roza on roadish tyres doesn't suit Avoca's red grease - uphill or down. I scrambled to the top ( fun fun fun..... ) to turn around to get back to Alan. Tied the rear of the Mouse to a tree and lowered him by winch as he was a bit concerned about angles and traction. By this stage the track was a small river

There's something weird about Avoca weather as well, get out of the car and it rains, get in it stops, although the hail we had
provided an unusual if cold diversion :o

Then looked at Old Bluff, if anything the hard line is significantly worse now and had to call that one off as Alan couldn't get enough traction to do the bypass.

Drove around to Slate Quarry, expecting the worst, but its easy now so finally got to the ridge top and went looking for easier stuff for a few hours.

Finally came back down the easy Old Bluff bypass (a bit of tree removal required - knew the chainsaw would come in handy ) which I think gave Alan some more white knuckles - steer and pray ( order debatable ) and back to Waterfall. As it was after 4 decided not to push our luck and headed back to Avoca.

So there we have it - might not rain that often in the Avoca region but it can turn an easy/medium trip into a medium/hard one in a flash. We kept it easyish but ........
