Fuel tank repair

Post by Damo »

Hi all
What is the most successful method of removing dints from a Sierra fuel tank.
Is it possible to inflate it or is that an urban myth

I think it was Greg who suggested compressed air to me. Worked a treat. I had a decent dent in the bottom of the tank. A couple of shots of compressed air popped it back out. I think I used the fuel return line.

Yes, air works, depends on the size and shape of the dent, the whole base of my tank was pushed up from several hits, I just put a blow gun/duster nozzle into the fuel filler opening (pulled the rubber hose off first) and jammed a rag around it.

Hit it with air first. Saving the tank you have has to be preferable to replacing it.
Air works very well.

So I tried this method by gently introducing air via the fuel line from the tank to the engine with the fuel cap in place.
Went well initially until the tank ruptured at a crease line
Thankfully it was a pin hole and a slow leak so whacked some soap on which seemed to slow it down and sent EMS to Repco for an emergency repair kit
Cohen to the rescue with a replacement tank
I will have another go at it once the tank is out and see how it goes as I’m curious to see if it works

That is the risk with sharp creases.

Just as a check, you could take it to a radiator repair shop and they can pressure test, clean area and soft solder pin holes to prevent cracking, if need be.
