Vitara fuel tank in maruti ute

Post by Rod_Muddytrail »

Could I get peoples opinions on fitting a vitara fuel tank in my maruti ute?
I’ve found a front cut sj80/jimny import(I think)and it has a g13ba with a 1.6 head and injection and got a vitara fuel tank with pick up incorporated
I rested the tank up there with trolley jack and could mount off the front mounts but curious how people achieved the rear ones.
I like the way it sits so high in chassis.

Sorry if your question has posed more additional questions than it's answering, but here goes.

The shortest answer is I don't think the front mounts will work at all.

A Vitara has a flat mounting flange, which is super convenient to work with. the Maruti tank has inclined mounts for some reason known only to suzuki. This makes the factory tank mounts pretty much useless for mounting the Vitara tank.

I've fitted SWB Vitara tanks to a number of cars, SWB and LWB, but not a LWB styleside (the maruti ute is based on the LWB styleside chassis. This is significant because the crossmembers are in different spots.

I've just had a look under the back of my Suzuki built LWB styleside and if your Maruti is the same, it has exactly the same mounts configuration as a SWB - The front mounts are on the shock crossmember and the rear mounts hang from a tube crossmember. A SWB vitara tank won't fit in this space - one or other crossmember will need to move. It might *just* drop down from above, with the mounting flange sitting on the crossmembers. This wouldn't be too hard to make mounts to do, but do consider you won't be able to remove the tank unless you remove the tray.

The tank also fills the space between the rails in this location, so the exhaust will have to terminate before it, or go under the tank which isn't ideal.

This isn't exactly what you're working with but you can see the complexity -

Here's two SJ70's with vitara SWB tanks installed.

They both have the rear crossmember in the standard location, the mounts for the stock tank have been removed and captive nuts/small drop brackets have been welded on to position the tank.

but at the front, a new tube crossmember has been installed to mount the tank. In both instances, even with 2" bumpstop spacing, the diff gets quite close to the tank.

Obviously, with a tray you can mounts the tank much higher. At one time I had my tank mounted with the flange above the chassis rail

With the obvious proviso about exhaust clearance, custom mounts, and the difficulty accessing the tank with the tray in place.

Oh, a quick word about your engine:

Some photos of what you have would be very helpful.
Is it a 16V head?
Is it multipoint EFI, or throttle body?

The most common import engines are Escudo G16A with an 8V head and throttle body EFI (these look like a carby G16A with a cast crossover pipe) or early G16B's with the SOHC 16V head.

I don't know how you'd identify if a G13 bottom end had a G16 head fitted - it sounds like you have a G13BB which is a factory JB33 jimny engine. If it's an grey import or not doesn't matter - they were an Australian delivered engine.

Ok, that’s a G13bb. It’s not really clear if it was a factory install for the SJ80 in Japan or not, but it doesn’t matter- it’s a very good choice for a Sierra.
