Thanks all. Have got hold of a wiring diagram. I did check and unplug things like brake switch and steering looms, as well as every other plug i could see :) Were things got to, is after a lot of trouble shooting, the problem went away! That said, a dull headlight remained so I re-wired that to fix ...

Thanks Jono. Brynn offered to bring an electric saw too. I wasn’t keen to bring one but will bring wood also.

My car's not fixed yet. Have worked on it but can't find the electrical fault yet. Still count me in!

Just reporting back on the results from this one. They ended up being stock size. ordered new rings, honed the bore and installed them.
Have probably done something like 500Km since installation and no smoke! So far so good!
