Rear drive shaft length - 89 vs 92 vitara

can anyone confirm if there was a length change between 1989 and 1992 vitaras?
I just installed a 92 box in my 89 vitara.
the box fitted up well despite a couple of small external differences (mainly loom).
when I installed the original 1989 rear drive shaft, it seems about 1/2 inch too short.
the dust flange on the shaft is not far forward enough to sleeve over the rear flange on the xfer case housing.
splines fitted up fine.
