Claires New Pooter wont work right

Post by christover1 »

Twice now Claire's brand new pooter has stopped working, and displayed a strange fuzzy screen. Its obviously still under warrantee, but won't stop werking when she takes it back to Harvey Norman.
I have not been doing the setting up tho.

It is now my job to fire up the new computer and see what is what.
We intend to photograph and video the screen to help pressure Harvey Norman into replacing it, rather than keep sending it back..
(Claire had that good idea)
It took 2 hours to do it the 2nd time, but only a few minutes to do it the 1st time.

Is it likely to be a video card problem, or is we doing something wrong.

It is a HP 500 gig hd with 2gig cpu and ram? quite a lot.

Hey Chris.

I am assuming it is an LCD computer monitor.
It is probably not the monitor, but have you tried a different screen ?

If the problem goes away, then it is the screen that is the issue.
The other thing is, does this fuzzy thing happen when the weather is hot ?
It could be a heat problem ?

Somebody else has been doing the initial set up, so can't really answer.
I will be setting it up myself this weekend, so I should get 1st hand info then.
It is a wide screen LCD , I'm not sure if the old crt monitor was tried, but will be giving that a look see.
It was very much hotter weather 1st time it died, but only very warm the 2nd time.

mqy
It sounds like a heat issue.
What actually happens to the screen ?

Saturday will be the hottest (32) so it may playup then.
You could wrap the computer in a heavy wool blanket and try and force it to fault.
If it does not fault after a 1 hour or so, it could be the LCD monitor with the problem.

If it plays up, try another screen (if you have a spare one)... If the problem goes away, then it is not the monitor.
As it still under warranty, I would not suggest opening the computer case etc.. This may void any warranty (not good)

Anyway... hope this helps.

thanks muchly.

Screen goes fuzzy, pixilated and lob sided, and colors all mix up, almost like water would do to a wet painting.
I'm fairly sure its the box not the screen, but I will plug in her old crt monitor when/if it happens.
I def won't be opening a brand new box

OK we put computer back together, and ran it for over 2 hours, by playing games and typing and stuff. No problems at all, but then we stuck in a dvd, knowing this would be a good test. It hung up/froze after less than 2 minutes.
So we videoed it and photographed it for evidence.
We have been given a contact at hp to help us out.
We will check that out first, before going back to HN.

Well at least it failed

If it freezes, then it is not the LCD screen. Sounds to me Video card related.
I hope HP help you out... If it is the CPU that hangs, a quick check is the num lock key/light (if it has one)
If the num lock light does not flash when press the button, then it is the mother board.
The issue with computers today is that everything is on the one computer board.
Gone are the days of individual cards.

If it is the video card, HP will need to replace the computer board. No one repairs anything these days.

Good luck

Claire has a relative who works for HP.
He applied some pressure for us, and gave us an internal contact to speak with  though I'm not sure if it was the reason HP/HN came to the party..
HN have now decided to replace whole tower, with the same or better, if they can't find the same.
Or possibly a whole new kit, including a bigger screen, if they can swing it.

All good news, but we are still waiting for it to actually happen.
