Some ribs welded onto the bash plates inside surfaces would add greatly to its strength, and not be hard to do.
Wouldnt' do it on the outside however as it would detract from the "skidability".
I have used "angle iron" lengths welded /\ to factory skid plates for club rally cars before and it added substantial strength without too much weight.

The structural alloy we used on the rodent has stood up very well, its quite light. It's a little on the expensive side but it works.
