auto transmission Jimny

Post by rusza »

It is about a 1999 Jimny, apparently the 2nd gear is lost. When the transmission is supposed to switch to the 2nd gear goes to fail safe mode. Auto transmission specialist did a routine maintenance, didn't help (for $500). They even didn't read the DTC. After reading the service manual I checked the DTC, it was showing "shift solenoid nr 1 circuit". After clearing and around 10 km test run didn't reappear any error code. Any suggestion for a good auto transmission specialist that isn't going to rip me off? Suzi world doesn't service auto transmission.

Rod at Wholesale Automatics.

However, be aware there isn't much available for these autos In terms of parts or service support.

Best thing you can do is run a temperature gauge and consider additional cooling.

If it's just a solenoid failure that's a fairly easy fix and is really no more work than a fluid/filter service - there usually on the bottom of the valve body with the pan/filter removed.

It is possible to get the parts direct from Japan.

As Steve said with these autos it is vital to keep an eye on the temperature and keep them cool.

The shift solenoids are parts 5 and 7 in the diagram. They can be check with a multimeter from the main plugs to the transmission which should be near the firewall.

Thanks for the answers. According to the bigjimny.com the car is Type1 (VIN: JSAFJB33V00100001 any higher JSAFJB33V0#######), the service manual 99500-81A02-01E should be the service manual of this car, however apparently the transmission (or at least the controller) is not the same what is in the manual. First of all not the O/D bulb is indicating the DCT codes but the Check Engine. What also was interesting that when I checked the DCT the code 21 was reported (Shift Solenoid No 1 circuit). When the car starts to move it is in 1st gear and when it is attempting to switch into gear 2 this doesn't happen but goes into fail safe mode (3rd gear). When I cleared the DCT, the error didn't re-appear, I always have the code 12 (Normal). Any thoughts?

I think given that it isn't shifting properly and it's still throwing codes relating to the solenoid you need to start physically diagnosing the problem.
I find error codes are not always 100% accurate but they give you a fairly good indication of what to start physically checking.
The first thing I would look at is the resistance of the transmission solenoid at the plugs in the firewall. They probably should be around 12ohms if they're in working condition. I would also look for any damages wiring related to the shift solenoids.
