Decided on 5G Wifi Pro to replace my Cable Internet.

Post by christover1 »

Decided my home internet is going 5G. Wasn't happy with NBN through very old copper, 3 houses from street underground.
(This may change with rumours of free or cheap upgrades to fttp in 2023 )
Also be cheaper going 5G for my single man uses, and useable away from home.
Plus no need for any installation peoples or fees (which nobody could quote without coming to inspect) .
Once Telstra realised I was serious about cancelling my cable internet, they came up with some better offers and pension discounts.
Which was more appealing, but 5G was still cheaper. (And I can take it with me on trips, if ever lock downs end)
As a long term Telstra customer I accrued enough points to discount the purchase of a 5G WiFi Pro.
So keep in mind, it is worth bargaining with your nbn suppliers.
Only annoyance is a new payment system, just to complicate matters.
Won't disconnect cable till new device is up and running.
And then will migrate mobile phone to new system to simplify things.
Thought hard on this for 6 months.
But with nbn cable cut off date at end of year, now seemed a good time to dive in and try it.
In 3 years time, will need a new phone, computer and my tablet already died, so will reconsider nbn then.

5G Wifi Pro came today, sim card arrived yesterday.
Set up was easy, once I realised battery needed putting in, and plastic had to come off the touch screen, lol.

Speed is 4x faster on upload, and 3x faster on download than my cable was.
Happy with that.
Hoping happiness continues as I find out how much data I use.
5G apparent chews through more data.
Even in lock down I have rarely used more than 30gig a month, of a 200gig limit,
so I opted for a medium plan, 75gig a month, which is the smallest for 5G access.
Cable was $70 a month, with pensioner discounts,
my new 5G set up is $55 a month.
5G WiFi Pro can be bought over 3, 2 or 1 year pay plans.
I bought outright with a biggish loyalty discount (Telstra Plus Rewards)
