Whole car salvage - 14 April

Post by rmitchell »

Luke and Neo had a great idea of getting club members to help (learn) to strip an entire Sierra. My crashed '84 NT Hitop. Most everyone has seen it and knows general condition. Doors and bonnet have been replaced. Exhaust is religious. Young Aaron got the roo bar and rails. I'm keeping winch bar.
The idea is to get a working knowledge, like Ben, of how to take apart a whole car and not have to worry about how it goes back together again.
The parts that I don't need for my new cyborg zook will be up for grabs and are available in the For Sale section to those who come and all parts left at Liz & Luke's will likely end up being donations when stuff gets busted, let's face it.

Pencilled in first weekend of school holidays as per Luke's post.
Will need a trailer to get the donor car down there from Elsternwick and recommendations for a scrappie who will take a bent out chassis and cut up body.

Works options:
  • Full Sierra dismantle
  • Winch dismantle then rebuild (my free spool doesn't engage)
  • Swap entire suspension
  • Panel welding & rust removal
  • Workable ways to straighten a winch bar
  • Practice welding on the old body/chassis
  • Practice cutting down doors
You're only limited by your imagination.

Attendees:
Luke
Rich
Neo
Jonno
Martin
Greg (?)

Great idea Rich. But there are a few items that you'd better keep for yourself. Doors, driveshafts etc. You'll want those again soon enough.

Never cut down a good set of doors.

greg is right, why cut down doors when u can just take the whole door off.

if u have any panels i would advise keeping some sheet steel for your rust repairs

if im free that weekend ill come out. i can also bring some of ur bits back as far as pakenham on my ute if u want

My problem here is that two broken Sierras reside on our property and replacing one with a bunch of parts is still too much "crap/junk" in my wife's eyes. Tail shaft I can hide away in the shed but Elsternwick doesn't have the spaciousness like Moe and King Lake.
Doors and bonnet have been swapped out along with seats, rails, steering wheel, shifter knobs.
Retractable seatbelts will be on offer too.
Will be good to see how the windscreen pops out.

Sounds good to me. The date should be set just after the wrecker weekend.
It won't take long to get the tub striped and parts packed up. There is a scrap yard in town so getting rid of the leftovers will be easy.

I will try and come, but I might spend the time on Lukes lathe more than your car.

No worries Neo. I'm not looking for free work on my car. Ideas are welcome and I've got a heap of stuff that insurance has paid out on for members to disassemble / rebuild / inquire / buy.
I'll be on the hoist changing over suspension somehow and then carby.
This can be treated like the second wrecker weekend but with an actual Sierra to pull apart, from diff to dash to doors.

Bump.
Would be good to get an idea of numbers please. I know it is middle of sch hols and High Country however there are a few 'outsiders' on that trip.
Rust is currently being repaired by a professional so probably no welding.
Thanks.
