Yes I know but the new 4WD Vic requirement is that one vehicle must carry chains.

You can hire and return for $40 or whatever it is, Bulla sports in Mansfield hire them out, it's on the way to Jamieson.
Thanks
Chris.

I understand mike. My point is that there’s no reason to buy chains you aren’t going to use. They only have to be present.

Dad bought a fabulously expensive set of konig chains 25 years ago for the same reason and they’ve never been out of their bag. They’re sitting in my shed.

They suit 31’s and I think will stretch to a 235 85 16 if anyone wants to borrow them.

Ah got it. Just carry any old set. They don't even need to fit.

Exactly.

It's a stupid rule. Everyone has to carry them, they have to fit and the owner has to know how to fit them or nobody does. Which would be cool, if chains were effective on Skene.

Chains are for groomed roads where overnight freezing creates smooth ice. Nothing grips ice - hence the need for chains, which, in reality just create extremely high localised ground pressure - same as bolts used by ice racers or studded tyres used in some countries in freezing conditions.

Only snow grips snow. It requires the opposite - minimum ground pressure.

Of course, 4WD victoria would never have thought of that - they'd have to understand 4WDing to work that out.

But I've seen patrols on mt skeen with chains on.

They must have worked really well because they managed to get on a really interesting angle on the embankment on the left of the road, then a few seconds later they were on the other side of the road facing the other way!

It was impressive.

Didn’t they ban ladder style chains in alpine areas
Had to replace mine, Mt Hotham wouldn’t let me go up till I got/hired Dimond
I loved my ladder chains in the mud
