Portland Sand Dunes - Interest Levels Confirmed!

Hi Team,

***Edit: We have hit the magic number! This trip is going to get organised!***

Given the successful kickoff of the Tassie Trip this year (it is actually happening!!), I thought it might be a good time to check what our club interest levels would be a for a trip down to Portland Sand Dunes. We've kicked this idea around before, but membership interest levels change, and so does my own.

So whaddawe reckon?

Obviously there is a distance to travel to get there.

We also expect that we would be paying a permit fee to get access to the dunes. It's currently $50 per driver.

Any vehicle and any tire size, but we know you either need a hard-top vehicle, or a soft top with roll cage and hard lid.

Assume a Friday Drive there, Saturday dune-ing, Sunday drive home format - Similar to the normal snow trip. Maybe a Monday home.

Given the organising required and interaction with another club - let's also assume full suzuki club membership required.

I reckon this needs 8 cars minimum to make it worth the effort. Which probably means we need a min of 12 people interested.

Good Idea? Put your hands up and I will get the ball rolling.

I am interested and my wife might even come along as well. It does depend on the date of course. I would probably make it a 3 day trip down on a Friday and back on the Sunday afternoon.

I haven't thought too hard about dates, but given other club trips that exist in the calendar every year, I think we have a two month window on both sides of the calendar:

September > October - this will be too soon for this year, and we have the tassie trip on. But it may be open next year.

April > May - by April the tour is complete. We can still have some nice weather before winter arrives.

It's my preference to avoid school holidays and easter to reduce the likelihood of traffic and busy dunes.

I guess they may be open all year, so the middle of winter may also work, but i expect the dunes would be miserable in the wind and rain.

What's the idea behind the hard lid on a softop with roll cage? Can a sheet of steel be affixed on-top of the cage or does the hard lid need to be attached to the windscreen/b pillar? Thanks.

On the cage is fine.

In the event of a roll it stops the cage digging in to the sand and offering no occupant protection.

Some light alloy ~3mm or alucobond would be ideal.
